So you've got yourself a lovely, shiny new website which is the envy of your industry. But how do your audience find it?

Anybody who uses the internet, in fact even those who don't, know the name Google. Well as you know Google is a 'search engine' which helps internet users find the websites that interest them by allowing them to search for relevant website content. But how does it work?

Google and other search engines (because contrary to popular opinion there are others) trawl all the websites on the internet and look at all the words and phrases contained in them. They also look at how many times those websites have been visited and how many other sites link to them. They do this all day every day.

When they've looked at a website they give it a score for all the content and visits and links and an ever changing list of other criteria and this is what decides what order the websites appear in the list when you search for something on the internet.

The trick is getting all your ducks in a row and making sure that the words and phrases your customers are searching for bring your website up in front of their eyes.

It doesn't sound like a difficult job making sure that your website contains relevant information does it, but an entire industry has sprung up to ensure that websites are put before the people who want to view them. The rules change almost daily and therefore you need to be talking to someone who knows those rules. Enter the SEO professional.
